Judith Rothchild, an American painter and engraver, has been working and living in the middle of France since 1974. Drawing is the center of her life. It is through looking and drawing that she finds harmony in the world. With a pastel, a pencil, or a burin in her hand, she better understands her surroundings. After years of work filled with pastel, she discovered mezzotint engraving in 1966 and since, has created hundreds of plates, as well as 42 artist’s books with her companion Mark Lintott, published by Editions Verdigris. Her engravings and books have traveled widely in exhibitions and salons in Paris, Europe, and the United States.
"La manière noire est, pour moi, du dessin pur. Je travaille pour trouver la lumière au fond de la surface veloutée de la plaque, directement sur le cuivre, d’après le sujet ou, parfois, d’après un dessin fait en voyage. Le travail s’accomplit en couches successives et la plaque garde la mémoire de chaque geste de la main. L’épreuve finale, souvent plus riche et plus précise qu’un dessin peut l’être, rassemble des heures de brunissage. La densité du noir ajoute aussi à la perception d’une super-réalité.
La manière noire est aussi, pour moi, étroitement liée au livre. Le velouté du grain est mieux apprécié sans la gêne d’une vitre. Les petits formats trouvent leur vraie place confrontés au texte."

Sometimes she feels the need to dream of a bigger, more graphic world. For the past ten years, she has also been creating large-format drawings on Conté squares to breathe in the fresh air.
